  School Health Advocates Make 125 Federal Legislative Visits on
Advocacy Day

More than 300 school health center advocates and youth joined the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care (NASBHC) in Washington D.C. to advance federal SBHC policies in health care and education reform.

A rally on June 17 kicked-off the morning with Congressional champions – Sen. Jeff Merkley (OR) and Reps. Lois Capps (CA), John Dingell (MI), Chris Murphy (CT), and John Sarbanes (MD) – who fired up the crowd for a great day of legislative visits on Capitol Hill. Participants spent the remainder of the day visiting their state's members of Congress. CSHC staff members and youth board members visited 20 California legislators, and other advocates from around the country made an additional 105 visits. See photos from the rally. Watch videos from Advocacy Day. (California's Rep. Lois Capps is on video Part II, 7:40). Read more.

Survey Shows 48% of Local Educational Agencies Cut Funding For Counselors, Nurses, and Psychologists

  On June 10th , State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell shared the results of a recent survey of California's Local Educational Agencies (LEAs). Across the state, LEAs are being forced to slash spending because of the economic downturn and budget crisis.  The survey asked LEAs to report which programs have lost funding or been eliminated since 2008. Administrators from 387 LEAs, representing 1.7 million students, completed the survey. Forty-eight percent of responding LEAs have cut funding for counselors, nurses, and psychologists. Other programs fundamental to student health and wellness have also been cut, including food and nutrition services (14% of LEAs) and physical education (12% of LEAs).  Read more.

  School Health Centers Win with Health Care Reform!

With President Obama signing the federal health care reform bill on March 23rd, school health centers have won a major victory because the bill includes two important provisions for school-based health centers (SBHCs):

  • language authorizing a federal SBHC grant program;
  • an emergency appropriation that would provide $200 million for SBHCs over four years for construction and capital improvements.
